The Way Home: The History of the AOH

The Ancient Order of Hibernians is America’s oldest Irish Catholic Fraternal Organization founded concurrently in the goal-mining region of Pennsylvania and New York City in May 1836. The Order traces its roots back to a series of similar societies that existed in Ireland for more than 300 years. Today, the AOH exists in America, Canada, Ireland, England, Wales, and Scotland but while the organizations share a common thread, the American AOH is a separate and much larger organization.

AOH Meck 2 is a non-profit organization the purposes of which, include Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity; to foster and sustain loyalty to country and community; to promote Irish culture; to perpetuate the history and traditions of the Irish people. We serve the following parishes near Lake Norman and Charlotte: St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville and draw our membership from St. Mark in Huntersville, Holy Spirit in Denver, St. Therese in Mooresville, and St. Patrick and St. Thomas Aquinas in Charlotte.
